What’s the difference between medical insurance and vision plans?

Vision plans are discount programs for routine vision exams and/or glasses/contact lenses. For the cost of a monthly premium, they typically cover basic exams and provide small discounts toward materials. Many times the discounts provided by vision plans are LESS than the annual cost of their premiums. And so, unless patients are using their vision plan benefits every year (i.e buying glasses every year), they end up spending MORE on their eye care using vision plans.

Health insurance or medical insurance covers the cost of general healthcare (either in part or whole), oftentimes including eyecare! That means that many patients have eye care coverage through their medical insurance (i.e. BCBS, Harvard Pilgrim, etc) for routine vision exams and/or medical eye conditions. If your eye exam requires more than just a basic vision check, such as patients with cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, dry eye disease, etc., then your visit is covered by your medical insurance (not your vision plan).
